Sick Pay

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) was first introduced in the UK in 1983, making employers responsible for paying workers for the first eight weeks that they are off sick, extending to 28 weeks in 1985.

Since 6th April 2019 workers need to earn at least £118 a week before qualifying for SSP. The minimum SSP employers are entitled to pay is £94.25 per week - before tax and NI deductions. Divided by a 35 hour working week, basic SSP is the equivalent of £2.69 per hour.
